The platform Sparx Maths has been embedded in lessons, with teachers using the questions that students found most difficult as a starter point to address misconceptions. Sparx personalises each child’s homework, creating a weekly set of questions tailored to their level of understanding and learning pace. The questions are designed to be achievable whilst offering the stretch that learners need to make progress. If you would like to know more, you can watch this video.

In terms of curriculum, the themes covered are:

Year 7 - Directed Numbers and Fractional Thinking

Year 8 - Developing Number

Year 9 - Percentages and Reasoning with Geometry

Year 10 - Proportion and Proportional Change

Year 11 - Exam preparation

Set 4 students from Year 7-10 - Fractions and Percentages

As part of their unit on Maths and Money, the Year 9 set 3 classes have enjoyed a lesson from Year 12 Business Studies students about how VAT and interests on loans affect businesses.

Our students achieve really well, and this is demonstrated also in national and international competitions.

Thanks to Mr Gupta for entering all TLA students into the first post-pandemic World Maths Day Competition: 22 students from Year 7 to 12 achieved a Bronze certificate.

Thanks also to Mr Salian for the amazing results achieved in the UKMT Intermediate Maths Challenge, with 1 Gold, 8 Silver and 13 Bronze certificates.

Finally, this term we have welcomed our new Maths Mentor - Ms Shaw who will provide small group tuitions for selected students across all year cohorts.
