Fire and Road Safety talk

Thank you to the Royal Berkshire Fire Service who came in to speak to Year 7 students about the importance of road and water safety. The session was very informative and provided the opportunity for students to ask questions to real-life firemen. We all have a responsibility to keep ourselves safe and support the people around us is doing the same, RBFS went through some strategies to help this happen.

Staying safe on Land and Water: A reflection on the assembly with RBFS:

In our daily lives, safety is key. Particularly near water and roads. Year 7’s recent talk with RBFS explicitly highlights this topic so we don’t make the wrong decision and stay alert.

We learned the risks associated with water activities by diving in terms of water safety. Whether you're swimming in lakes, rivers, or participating in water sports like paddleboarding, it's crucial to understand potential dangers. Additionally, activities like jumping into water or being near weirs require awareness and caution. Even visiting the coast demands respect for water safety.

The presentation also highlighted the dangers associated with traveling in vehicles and being near roads. Whether a passenger in a vehicle, or walking along the road, or using powered transporters like e-scooters, it's important to recognize potential risks. This includes being mindful when airbags deploy or when distractions arise.

Overall, Year 7 learned new areas and dangers they were unaware of and aim to embrace their knowledge in the future.

Food Technology

Recently, Year 7 students had the opportunity to learn about food hygiene, preparation, and safe cutting techniques. This session was a great way to teach students about the importance of safe food handling practices, especially when preparing food at home. Students learned about the correct way to handle food, including washing hands, and keeping work surfaces clean. They were also taught how to use different utensils and knives safely, and how to cut vegetables and fruit without causing injury. Overall, this session was a valuable learning experience that will help students stay safe and healthy when preparing food in the future.

Science

In science lessons, Year 7 students have been learning about light waves. They have been exploring how light behaves and how it travels. Students have learned about the different types of waves that make up the electromagnetic spectrum, including radio waves, microwaves, infrared waves, ultraviolet waves, X-rays, and gamma rays. They have also learned about the properties of light, such as reflection, refraction, and absorption.

Through hands-on experiments and demonstrations, students have gained a better understanding of how light waves work and how they interact with objects in their environment. This knowledge will enable them to make informed decisions and appreciate the impact of light on their daily lives.

UK Junior Maths Challenge

It's great to hear that some of our students recently completed the UK Junior Maths Challenge. Three students were able to achieve the gold award, which is a fantastic achievement. Additionally, seven students received the silver award and five students received the bronze award. Completing the Maths Challenge is a great way for students to challenge themselves and showcase their mathematical abilities. Congratulations to all the students who participated and a special congratulations to those who received awards!

On culture day, students had the opportunity to dress up in traditional attire from different cultures. It was wonderful to see the diversity and vibrancy of outfits representing various countries and traditions.
