"Learning a new language is not only learning different words for the same things but learning another way to think about things." This message from Flora Lewis is one that really resonates with the MFL department at TLA, so we were delighted when four Year 9 students agreed to participate in the annual TVLP Spelling Bee competition.

The purpose of the competition was to motivate students to continue with their language studies in French and Spanish through to GCSE and A Level. There was a focus on the benefits of learning another modern language which opens up new opportunities both in the careers field and socially, whilst also celebrating the food and rich culture that these countries can offer.

The event brought together some of the brightest young linguists from The Langley Academy, Beechwood School, Herschel Grammar, Slough & Eton, Windsor Boys, Windsor Girls, Holyport College, St Mary’s Ascot, and St Joseph’s. Representing TLA with confidence and determination were Shraddha, Jasnor, Rajonya, and Dariusz They demonstrated exceptional spelling skills, composure under pressure, and an impressive command of vocabulary as they navigated through multiple challenging rounds. The competition featured a series of increasingly difficult words in French or Spanish, testing not only spelling ability but also concentration and quick thinking.

The competition began with two rigorous online rounds. The standard was exceptionally high, and after much deliberation, only six students from each language category secured a coveted spot in the final, one of which being Rajonya from TLA. This highly anticipated final round took place at Windsor Boys’ School, where competitors and teachers were warmly welcomed with French pastries and hot chocolate. The event officially commenced with an engaging student panel, featuring members from the language department at Holloway University and a PGCE student from Windsor Boys. Panellists shared inspiring stories from their gap year travels, provided practical advice on overcoming language learning challenges, and discussed the wide array of career opportunities available to multilingual individuals. With such an exceptional level of talent on display, the competition underscored the importance of language learning and cultural exchange. The event left students feeling motivated and enthusiastic about continuing their linguistic journeys, reinforcing the value of multilingualism in an increasingly globalized world. To reward their efforts, staff and students were treated to a tasty lunch, featuring a selection of traditional French and Spanish dishes, enabling them to immerse themselves in foreign cuisine, quite literally offering them a taste of life in France and Spain.

Ms. Rubio expressed her pride in the students' engagement and participation, stating, "I am incredibly proud of our students for their dedication and enthusiasm throughout the competition. They represented the academy with excellence, showcasing not only their language skills but also their commitment to embracing new cultures and experiences."
